Let’s get real, Google has a little hand in anything technology,
analytics, and innovation in general. One of Google’s less talked about applications
is Google Trends, which takes an analysis of all the searches that are
happening at a time and creates a continuously updated report. But why would
anyone need to know this?
Well let’s look at some of the reports from today…
At 3:00pm today, the highest trending topic is about the
Kardashians/Jenners. On Super Bowl Sunday, the most searched topic was about Kylie Jenner’s
Pregnancy. You would assume that on the biggest day in football and
advertising, people who be researching about them. The funny thing is, the
Puppy Bowl was rated higher than anything having to do with the actual Super
Bowl.
At 8:30pm tonight, the highest trending topic was about Patriots
player, Rob Gronkowski and the Kardashian story was knocked down too number 22.
That is a huge drop in just a matter of
hours.
As a marketer, these reports are so important. While today’s report may seem unimportant, imagine if a new law was passed, or a Hollywood scandal occurred.
It would be crucial to know how people are reacting to it, especially if it
pertains to your industry, so that you can target your social media post, and
general marketing messages that day around what people are talking about.
Take the Tide Pod Challenge for example.
Teenagers were filming themselves eating Tide Pods and
posting the video to their social media platforms. This is very dangerous
because these Pods are toxic to eat. If Tide wasn’t watching social media
trend, they may have not noticed this happening. But because they were watching
for their company in trends, they were able to change their social media campaigns
for the day and post PSAs about the dangers
of eating their products.

This is a great post because it is so important that a social media manager constantly be assessing the current position of their brand in the digital realm. If a company simply schedules posts and expects that to be enough without adjusting to what is relevant, they are not going to achieve their desired results. Best case scenario is they lack engagement; worst case, they end up with a situation like Tide and it spirals out of control because no one was paying attention!
ReplyDeleteGoogle Trends is such a great resource for marketers. I have personally used it to help with ideas for content to post on Facebook and Twitter at my job. Knowing what people are talking about and googling gives us a great idea of how to reach our target market. I agree it is crucial for companies to stay on top of what is in the news and what people are saying about their brand.
